What you’ll need

  • The printer’s manual for toner and drum installation
  • A known-good document to print, such as a test page
  • Plain paper of a supported type
  • Scrap paper to rest a cartridge on

Overview

A laser printer printing blank pages is usually telling you one of three things: no toner is reaching the page, the computer is sending empty pages, or the printer is feeding extra sheets. The most common cause after installing a new cartridge is a protective seal or strip that wasn’t removed. This guide sorts the causes with a simple test, then works through the fixes safely.

Toner and drum designs vary between models, so the exact packing materials and seating steps differ. Keep the manual or the instructions from the toner box beside you.

Before you start

  • Note when it started. Right after replacing toner, after moving the printer, after a driver change, or out of nowhere? That narrows things down quickly.
  • Check whether every page is blank or only some, such as an extra blank page at the end of each job.
  • Turn off, unplug and cool down before reaching inside.
  • Don’t open the cartridge. Only remove the seals and covers the instructions describe.

Key terms

  • Toner seal or protective strip: packing material on a new cartridge that keeps toner in during shipping. If it stays in place, no toner reaches the drum.
  • Drum unit: the roller the toner image forms on, built into the cartridge on some models and separate on others.
  • Configuration report: a page the printer prints on its own, useful for checking the printer without the computer.
  • Separator page: a page some printers or print systems add between jobs on purpose.

Find out where the blank pages come from

  1. Print the printer’s own configuration report. Use the control panel or the button sequence from the manual. Is the report blank too? If yes, the problem is inside the printer: go to the next section. If the report prints normally, the printer works and the cause is the computer, the document or the driver: go to step 2.
  2. Print a test page from the computer. If the test page prints but your document doesn’t, the document itself may contain blank pages or white text, or the app may have a print setting such as printing a blank selection.
  3. Try another app or a simple document. If everything from this computer is blank but other computers print fine, remove and re-add the printer, or reinstall the driver. See how to install or update a laser printer driver.
  4. Clear the print queue if old jobs are stuck or corrupted. See print queue stuck.

Fix blank pages that come from the printer

  1. Check for leftover packing material. Turn off and unplug the printer and let it cool. Open the door to the toner and remove the cartridge (and drum, if separate) as the manual shows. Look for a pull tab, plastic strip, clip or orange piece that should have been removed. Remove it as instructed. Was there a seal or strip? If yes, reinstall and print a test page.
  2. Reseat the toner and drum. Reinstall the cartridge so it clicks into place, and on models with a separate drum, make sure the toner is locked into the drum before the pair goes in. Close all doors firmly.
  3. Check the toner level. An empty cartridge can produce blank or nearly blank pages. Replace it with a cartridge listed for your exact model. See how to replace a toner cartridge.
  4. Try a different cartridge if you have one. A faulty cartridge or drum can print blank pages even when full.
  5. Check the paper. Make sure paper isn’t feeding two sheets at once and that the paper type is supported. Fan the stack before loading.

Prevent it happening again

  • Follow the instructions in each new toner box. Packing materials differ between cartridges, even for the same printer, so read the leaflet each time rather than relying on memory.
  • Store spare cartridges sealed and level, in a cool, dry place, until you need them.
  • Replace toner when the printer reports it as empty rather than waiting for completely blank pages, and keep one spare cartridge listed for your model if you print a lot.
  • Keep the driver tidy. One working printer entry per computer reduces the chance of a misconfigured duplicate sending empty jobs.

Check that it worked

  1. The printer’s configuration report prints with clear text.
  2. A test page from the computer prints correctly.
  3. Your original document prints with the expected number of pages.
  4. If extra blank pages appeared between jobs, a separator page setting is off in the printer or print dialog, if your model or system has one.

When to contact the manufacturer

Contact the manufacturer through its official support site if:

  • The printer’s own report is blank with a new, correctly installed genuine cartridge and drum.
  • The printer shows a toner or drum error that won’t clear after reseating.
  • You hear unusual grinding noises or smell burning. Turn the printer off, unplug it and stop using it.
  • The issue began after a firmware update.

FAQ

Why does my laser printer print blank pages after I installed new toner?

The most common reason is a protective seal, strip or cover that is still on the cartridge. Remove the cartridge and check against the instructions that came with it.

Can an empty toner cartridge cause completely blank pages?

Yes, although many printers stop or warn before that point. If the toner level shows low or empty, replace the cartridge.

Why is there an extra blank page at the end of every job?

Often the document has an empty last page, such as a trailing page break. Some printers or print setups also add separator pages. Check the document and the print settings.

Could the driver cause blank pages?

Yes. If the printer’s own report prints normally but every job from one computer is blank, remove and re-add the printer or reinstall the driver from an official source.

Is it safe to keep printing while I troubleshoot?

Printing a few test pages is fine. Stop if you notice burning smells, smoke or grinding noises.
